Minor gradient in mortality by education at the highest ages: An application of the Extinct-Cohort method

چکیده
BACKGROUND Socioeconomic mortality differentials are known to exist almost universally. Many studies show a trend towards convergence with increasing age. Information about the highest ages is very rare, though. OBJECTIVE We want to find out whether socioeconomic factors determine the chance of death in the United States among the oldest people. METHODS Based on official death count records, we employ the extinct cohort method to estimate the age-specific probability of dying by level of education. RESULTS We present evidence that socioeconomic differentials in mortality exist even at the highest ages (95+), although the gap is small. 1 University of Rostock, Department of Sociology & Demography, Rostock, Germany and Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock, Germany. An Evaluation of Nearly-Extinct Cohort Methods for Estimating the Very Elderly Populations of Australia and New Zealand
The rapid growth of very elderly populations requires accurate population estimates up to the highest ages. However, it is recognised that estimates derived from census counts are often unreliable. Methods that make use of death data have not previously been evaluated for Australia and New Zealand. The aim was to evaluate a number of nearly-extinct cohort methods for producing very elderly popu...
متن کاملResponse of Poaceous Weeds in Wheat to Post-Emergence Herbicides
Poaceous weeds are prolific and competitive in winter crops, but they are more insidious in wheat due to their similar morphology and growing requirements. Herbicides are effective and efficient tools of weed management, however, they are vulnerable to resistance, and herbicides with different modes of action might check the dominance of a particular weed flora. The current study was undertaken...
متن کاملEducational gains in cause-specific mortality: Accounting for cognitive ability and family-level confounders using propensity score weighting.
A negative educational gradient has been found for many causes of death. This association may be partly explained by confounding factors that affect both educational attainment and mortality. We correct the cause-specific educational gradient for observed individual background and unobserved family factors using an innovative method based on months lost due to a specific cause of death re-weigh...
متن کاملMortality Measurement at Advanced Ages: A Study of the Social Administration Death Master File
Accurate estimates of mortality at advanced ages are essential to improving forecasts of mortality and the population size of the oldest old age group. However, estimation of hazard rates at extremely old ages poses serious challenges to researchers: (1) The observed mortality deceleration may be at least partially an artifact of mixing different birth cohorts with different mortality (heteroge...
متن کاملMortality following unemployment during an economic downturn: Swedish register-based cohort study
OBJECTIVE To investigate if unemployment during an economic downturn is associated with mortality, even among men with markers of better health (higher cognitive function scores and qualifications), and to assess whether the associations vary by age at unemployment. DESIGN Longitudinal register-based cohort study. SETTING Study entry was in 1990 and 2001 when Sweden was entering periods of ...
